HOUSING
We deserve safe, stable, and affordable homes.
Everyone in our city, regardless of their income or the neighborhood they live in, should be able to afford a place to live. But for so many people, finding and staying in affordable housing is a struggle. We’re experiencing a housing crisis in Minneapolis. And our current mayor’s policies are failing our residents. He has prioritized supply-side responses that benefit developers but that don’t address the urgent needs of those most vulnerable to losing their homes. And he’s consistently lied about the scale of the unhoused crisis and his own team’s response to encampments. Our unhoused neighbors need to be supported by providers and resources, not police and bulldozers.
We deserve better.
We deserve a mayor who will be honest with us about the housing and homelessness crises we’re facing. We deserve a city government that will pursue housing policies that benefit everyone–to ensure there are safe and stable homes, affordable at every income level.
We need a multifaceted approach to solving our housing and homelessness problems. We need to build more units–but we can’t exclusively rely on private development to meet our needs. We need to encourage public and nonprofit housing production across our city so that those with the lowest incomes are also able to afford to live here. As mayor, I will invest city dollars in programs to develop non-profit affordable housing. I will work with the City Council to invest more in our current tools and explore Program-Related Investments (PRIs) that would specifically help develop non-profit housing for people at or below 30% of AMI.
Housing is foundational–for safety, for families, and for communities. Throughout Minneapolis, neighbors are demanding more humane, caring, and honest responses to the housing and homelessness crises. As mayor, I will prioritize policies that align with our shared values to ensure everyone has a safe, dignified, and affordable place to call home.
