CLIMATE

We deserve leadership that meets the urgency of the climate crisis.

We live on a planet of startling beauty and diversity. We are called to care for the planet, not only for ourselves, but also for all living beings who share this home with us. There is no more pressing issue than the climate crisis. Right now, it’s easy to feel despair as Trump’s federal government is gutting environmental protections, backing out of climate agreements, and making it more difficult and expensive for us to invest in climate solutions. We know we can’t rely on the federal government to address the climate crisis, so local government has to step up. Unfortunately, we can’t trust our current mayor to execute our city’s ambitious climate goals. Time and again, he’s ignored our climate goals and plans and failed to meet the urgency of the crisis.

We deserve better.

We deserve a mayor who understands that climate concerns must be a part of all of our policy decisions. We deserve a mayor who will faithfully execute our city’s ambitious Climate Equity Plan and other climate-focused plans. It’s not enough to voice support for the plans and then go back to business as usual. We need leadership who is willing to deliver on climate promises, even when they conflict with corporate interests or what wealthy donors want.

We deserve a mayor who invests in community solutions to the climate crisis. As mayor, I will make sure our neighborhoods are able to rely on non-carbon sources of energy and commit the additional revenue needed to get us to 100% renewable energy by 2030. We need to commit to becoming a zero-waste city, which also includes closing the HERC as soon as possible. We can’t rely on utility companies alone to get us there – we need community-owned and community-connected energy options. I will work to build more cooperative solar gardens, especially in low-income neighborhoods or neighborhoods with high percentages of renters. I will also work to make sure every neighborhood has a climate-focused resilience hub: somewhere folks can go during times of emergency, and where folks can access training, resources, and support for climate action in their homes and neighborhoods.

The climate crisis is here–but together we can meet the challenges we face. We can build a healthy, resilient city for all of us and for generations who come after us. As mayor, I’ll prioritize climate solutions that meet the scale of the problems we face and ensure climate equity across our city.
