CIVIL RIGHTS

We deserve a mayor who defends vulnerable communities from the Trump administration.

Minneapolis is an incredible city with a vibrant, inclusive culture. Many communities have made their home here because they know we will welcome them and care for them as neighbors. Immigrants and refugees have come here seeking safety from political violence and economic devastation. LGBTQIA+ folks have come from surrounding cities and states, seeking safety from hate-based violence and an affirming cultural home. I love Minneapolis because we make space for and care for folks who are excluded and targeted elsewhere.

It’s precisely our diversity and our inclusive culture that makes us a target for the Trump administration. Donald Trump and his allies are attacking our communities. They are threatening immigrants and refugees with mass deportation–kidnapping people and removing them without due process. They are pursuing cruel and discriminatory policies targeting the LGBTQIA+ community–outlawing life-saving medical procedures, criminalizing our very existence. Yet, when the Trump administration is targeting our communities, our mayor is nowhere to be found.

We deserve better.

We deserve a mayor who will ensure that our city government–including the Minneapolis Police Department–does not cooperate or coordinate with federal agents targeting our most vulnerable communities. We deserve a city government that will devote resources to filling in the gaps created by Trump’s cuts to the programs and services our communities need.

When the Trump administration sent federal agents to intimidate and threaten our communities, I showed up for our city. As mayor, I will continue to show up to defend our neighbors who are under attack. I will work to ensure that Minneapolis remains a welcoming home for anyone seeking a city where they can be accepted for who they are.
